Is linen sustainable?

Linen is one of the most sustainable fibers produced today, and that hasn’t changed since it was one of the first fibers to be used for clothing. Linen comes from the flax plant, during growth flax requires very little water to grow, it converts a large amount of CO2 into oxygen, and the whole plant gets used. At the end of its lifecycle, linen fabric can be composted back into the earth.

Hand wash your linen garment in a clean sink filled with cool water. Use an eco-friendly detergent and gently agitate the garment to remove any dirt, sweat, and stains. Remove linen items from the soapy water, drain the sink and rinse your garment. Fill the sink with clean cold water and gently agitate the garment again, this time to remove any leftover soap. Repeat as needed until water is soap-free. Once the soap is removed, gently squeeze your linen items (do not twist) to remove excess water and hang in the shade to dry.

Machine wash your linen clothes with like colors on a gentle cycle. Use cold water and a gentle eco-friendly detergent. Hang in the shade to dry. If needed, steam iron on high. Do not bleach.

Before placing your linen clothes in storage, wash them to remove any dirt, stains, or oils. Deter mold and pests by placing them in an airtight plastic container. Store the container in a cool dry place, away from sunlight. When removing your linen clothing from storage, hang them to release any wrinkles, and steam iron if needed.

Remove wrinkles from linen by ironing it while it's still damp. If needed, spritz the garment with water before ironing. Fill your iron with water and use the steam function. For stubborn wrinkles, use the highest temperature on your iron.
